10 Things I Wish Every Couple Knew Before Their Wedding Day

After all the planning, decisions and anticipation, your wedding day arrives and passes more quickly than you could ever expect.

There is so much advice available about planning the perfect wedding, but the truth is that the most memorable celebrations are not always the ones where everything goes exactly to plan. They are the ones where the couple feels present, connected and free to enjoy the day.

Here are a few things I wish every couple knew before their wedding.

#1 The Day Will Go Incredibly Fast

You spend months, and sometimes years, planning your wedding, but the day itself can feel like it is over in a moment.

Take time throughout the day to pause. Look around the room, hold each other’s hand and notice the people who have come to celebrate with you.

Even a few quiet minutes together can help you take everything in before moving on to the next part of the day.

#2 Your Timeline Needs Breathing Room

A wedding timeline is important, but it should not have every minute filled.

Hair and makeup can run late. Family photographs can take longer than expected. Travel, traffic and small interruptions can also affect the schedule.

Allowing extra time means you can enjoy each part of the day without feeling rushed. It also gives space for the natural, unplanned moments that often become some of your favourite photographs.

#3 Getting-Ready Spaces Make a Difference

The space where you get ready has a noticeable effect on your photographs.

If possible, choose a room with plenty of natural light and enough space for everyone. Keeping one area near a window free from bags, clothing and food containers will create a calm place for portraits and detail photographs.

It does not need to be a perfect or expensive space. Good light and a little room to move are what matter most.

#4 You Do Not Need to Know How to Pose

It is completely normal to feel nervous about being photographed, especially if you have never had professional photos taken together.

You do not need to practise poses or know what to do with your hands. My job is to offer guidance when you need it while still allowing you to interact naturally.

Focus on each other, stay close and trust the process. The photographs that feel most like you often come from the moments between the more traditional portraits.

#5 Family Photographs Are Worth Planning

Family photographs are important, but they can quickly become stressful without a clear plan.

Before the wedding, create a short list of the group photographs that matter most. Let the people involved know where they need to be and ask someone who knows both families to help gather everyone.

Keeping the list thoughtful and organised leaves more time for you to enjoy the celebration.

#6 The Best Photographs Need Time

Beautiful photographs do not always require hours away from your guests, but allowing enough time for portraits makes a difference.

A relaxed portrait session gives you a chance to step away together, take a breath and enjoy one of the first quiet moments of being married. It also allows space for creativity without making your photographs feel forced or rushed.

If possible, leave a small window around sunset. The softer light at this time can create some of the most beautiful photographs of the day.

#7 Your Ceremony Should Reflect You

Your ceremony is the heart of your wedding day. It does not need to follow a formula or feel overly formal unless that is what you genuinely want.

Choose readings, music, traditions and words that feel meaningful to you both. Personal vows, shared stories and small details often create the strongest emotional moments.

Try to look at each other throughout the ceremony rather than only toward the celebrant. This moment belongs to you.

#8 Things May Not Go Exactly to Plan

The weather may change. Someone may be late. A button could come loose or the flowers might look slightly different from what you imagined.

These things rarely affect the meaning of the day unless you allow them to.

Some of the most memorable photographs happen when plans shift. Wind, rain and unexpected moments can bring movement, emotion and personality to your story.

#9 Choose Suppliers You Trust

Your wedding suppliers play a big role in how the day feels.

Choose people whose work you love, but also people you feel comfortable communicating with. Once the wedding arrives, you should be able to trust them to do their job without needing to manage every detail yourself.

When you feel supported, you have more freedom to stay present and enjoy your day.

#10 You Will Never Regret Being Present

Try not to spend the day worrying about schedules, decorations or whether every guest is having a good time. The people you love are there because they want to celebrate with you.

Be fully present. Laugh loudly, hug your family, take your time walking down the aisle and enjoy the dance floor.

Your photographs will preserve how everything looked, but they will also bring you back to how it felt.

A wedding does not need to be flawless to be beautiful. It just needs to feel honest, meaningful and true to the two of you.

Much love,

Sarah xo
